I have been writing my books for about six years now. I feel with each book, I am learning more and more about writing, and the craft of writing. As I continue to write fantasy, I think I’m getting more creative. At least, I’d like to think so.
Over the years, I’ve had to come up with ways to tap into my creative prowess. I would draw maps, though they didn’t really look like maps because I can’t draw. I would create character sheets, listing the different physical aspects of my characters, as well as some personality traits, and what their magical powers are. I would determine what my world was going to look like and try to keep that look going throughout the storyline.
One of the most important things I’ve learned about my creative process is that I can’t rush it, and I must keep notes. I found out the hard way that if I didn’t keep notes, I’d easily forget where something is supposed to be. And readers notice this, trust me. I certainly do as a reader, myself. So, part of my creative process became keeping clear notes on my creations.
For my new book, Destiny, I actually started a journal. I’ve got a notebook with sections set up for my characters, important places, and important items to my series. This will allow me to make sure I continue to get all of the details correct in future books of the series.
In addition to using my notes during my writing sessions, I also love to listen to music. I have found that the “Celine Dion” station on Pandora provides a wonderful mix of the music I love. I can just log in and have my music play over and over the entire time I’m on my computer writing, researching, organizing…whatever work I have to do at a given time.
The rest of my creative process is to make sure that I have something to drink on my desk, usually iced tea, and some snacks nearby, preferably potato chips.
My newest addition to my creative process is a beautiful candle I bought at the store the other day. Its scent is “Peaceful Waters,” and it smells like a dream, keeping me calm and peaceful as I work.
Such is my creative process. It tends to grow and change over the years as I continue to write, and I’m sure I’ll add new things to my process as I go.
What is your creative process? What must you have in order to get your creative juices flowing?
