Maria Bradley tagged me to partake in the “Meet My Character” blog tour. I’ll be featuring my main character of the Zincian Legend series, Kaia Ketoki. Before I do that, here’s a little bit about Maria:
The truth is I am a very boring person and Author Bio’s scare the living daylights out of me! Maybe that’s why I love to write because I can be whoever I want to be in the book for a little while. Reading accomplishes the same task and I could be Hermione, Katniss or, dare I say it, Voldemort!
Voldemort appears in our house when one of my sons leave their boxers on a wet bathroom floor. Katniss, weapons included, turns up when the food cupboards are bare and no-one will go to the shop for me. Sadly, Hermione can only exist within the pages of JK Rowling’s masterpiece, as her genius is far beyond my reach.
Now, a little about me (don’t blame me if you fall asleep). I have worked in various jobs including Finance Clerk, Sales and merchandiser and more recently with special needs children and adults (volunteer). When I started writing in 2012 I discovered that it is all I ever wanted, and I should have done it sooner, or at least before I developed age-related arthritis, and can barely hold a pen. Thank the lord for our digital world or I might never have written a sentence. Anyway, that’s me; reasonably boring but constantly excited about being part of the writing world, and long may it last!
Meet My Character
1. What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?
Kaia Ketoki starts off as a 14-year-old girl in The Chosen. At the start of The Number, she’s 19. Kaia is a very fictional girl. I tried to give her traits and personalities that would be typical to someone who’s shy and unsure and try to draw her out of her shell.
2. When and where is the story set?
The story starts off in the distant future of Earth in a sort of “utopia” village, though the world around them has fallen into a dystopia. After the destruction of the village, the story moves to Zinc, a sister planet of Earth’s.
3. What should we know about him/her?
She’s been deemed “The Chosen One” by gods of Zinc. Because of a prophesy (because prophecies are the ruin of everything) her village becomes destroyed, she gets plucked away from everything she knows and loves, and is placed into an all new setting with people she’s never known. I like to think she has a good head on her shoulders, because despite everything, she’s help up quite well. Like everyone, she faces her doubts of whether or not she’s capable of doing what’s expected of her and she struggles with the enormity of her responsibility. She spends a lot of time in The Chosen, going back and forth as to whether or not she should find a way out of being The Chosen One. Kaia’s quiet, but she’s come a long way from the start and as she becomes more comfortable with the people around her, I hope that it shows that she’s become more sure of herself as a leader.
4. What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?
As stated above, a prophecy is the reason why her life is all messed up. She needs to save the gods of Zinc from a horrible demise. Because of a certain system of rules in place, the gods can’t take care of the situation themselves, lest they accidentally destroy the world due to their powers. So they have to middlemen do the job. Because Kaia’s grandmother was their last savior, they feel that Kaia, being the last descendant, has the power to help them. She doesn’t think so, but she’s trying.
5. What is the personal goal of the character?
To belong and to find home. Being The Chosen One, she doesn’t feel like she fits in with the world around her, despite the fact that the world around her is full of all sorts of creatures and humanoids. She longs to return back home and hopes that when everything is over, she can go home and just be normal.
6. Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?
The first two novels in the Zincian Legend series are: The Chosen and The Number. You can head on over to the series page to find out more about the books, read excerpts, and even listen to the playlists.
The third and final novel in the series is titled THE GUARDIAN. I’m currently making my way through the first round of edits.
7. When can we expect the book to be published?
I had hopes that THE GUARDIAN would be published before October of this year, but that’s not going to happen. My new publication goal is before June 2015. I’ll work like crazy during the winter to get it done.
Thanks for stopping to meet my character! The next author to join in on this hop is the one and only Morgan Straughan Comnick. Be sure to stop by her website next week to learn about her character!
Educator of young minds by day, super nerdy savior of justice and cute things by night, Morgan Straughan Comnick has a love for turning the normal into something special without losing its essence. Morgan draws from real life experiences and her ongoing imagination to spark her writing. In her spare time, she enjoys doing goofy voices, traveling to new worlds by turning pages, humming child-like songs, and forcing people to smile with her “bubbliness.” It is Morgan’s mission in life to spread the amazement of otaku/Japanese culture to the world and to stop bullying; she knows everyone shines brightly.
